Surf Lessons

Hawaii • Honeymoon • Wedding • Activities • Getting Around • Good Books

Hawaii is home to some of the best surfing in the world. Especially if you are not a pro--there are plenty of opportunities to learn to surf in Maui and Oahu. Most surf schools offer everything-you-need packages (including boards, instruction, footies, and rash guards) and many even guarantee that you'll get up in your first lesson.

We were skeptical, so we signed up for Outrageous Adventures (1.877.339.1400). Sure enough, we were up and surfing on their long boards by the time the lesson was up. Now, these waves were the equivalent of a bunny hill and the friendly instructors held our boards and gave us a push, but we were up nonetheless. And by the time our two hours were up, we were pretty exhausted as well.

Some advice, though: when booking your Hawaii surf lessons, ask about the student-to-instructor ratio. Nearly all will guarantee a max of 5-to-1. However, beyond that you should ask how many instructors and how many different schools are going to be in the same area at one time. We got the promised student-to-instructor ratio but by the end of our class, there were 4 schools in the same location, each with 6 instructors. It was the most crowded acre of water we had ever seen.

Discount Tips: If you're really on a budget, the BEST discounts are available for the cost of a little time--if you sit through a timeshare presentation (generally they're 1.5-2 hours long). For your time, you can get discounts of up to 90%...

For more straightforward discounts of ~10%, we HIGHLY recommend Tom Barefoot Discount Hawaii tours. When we found Tom Barefoot, we cancelled our direct booking with our snorkeling and Luau and booked the EXACT same thing with the the same company through Tom Barefoot for 10% less. No gimmicks, no catches.
