Running along the coast, south and west of Wailea is you'll arrive at Makena. Much like Wailea, Makena is an upscale residential neighborhood with lots of white beach but not much "town" to speak of (in fact, just south of Makena is the largest undeveloped white sand beach on Maui). Again, upscale resorts are the primary locations here.

Makena Resort Hotels

Also reviewed on our Wilea page, the Maui Prince Hotel (808.874.1111) is on the edge of Makena/Wilea. The Maui Prince boasts that every room in the resort has an ocean view. While we haven't personally verified that, the grounds are gorgeous. White sand beaches, 36 hole golf course, and tennis courts are sprinkled alongside the Asian meditation gardens (complete with waterfalls). Of course the staff is as helpful and courteous as you'd expect from a wonderful resort.

Makena also has some great furnished condos (more so than Wilea). If you're staying for more than a couple of days we recommend checking out furnished condos in Makena--they're more homey and offer better deals than resorts will.

Because Makena is more upscale we strongly recommend that you shop around online for the best deals. Different websites will offer different prices for the SAME rooms on the same dates. Some sites that specialize in Hawaiian travel packages come up with prices that even the hotels themselves cannot beat. Spend some time looking for hotel discounts online...
