On the southern side of Maui, Kihei is a quiet town replete with beaches. Although there are some hotels to be found here, we were enticed into a bread and breakfast in this cute town.

Kihei Hotels and Bed and Breakfasts

On our most recent trip, we stayed at Kai's Bed and Breakfast (808-874-6431). While the room was nicely sized and we appreciated the complementary use of boogie boards, beach chairs, and beach umbrellas, we had two complaints: the first was that our suite had an air-conditioning unit that was permanently attached to a timer that only lasted one hour. This virtually guaranteed that we'd wake up multiple times throughout the night in sweltering heat and have to manually reset the timer. Our second complaint is that we found that Rob and Patty, the owners, were very hard to reach for advice, suggestions, or help of any kind. In general, our favorite aspect of B&B's is the friendly, helpful, "homey" hosts that treat you like good friends. Not so here. Rob and Patty run this place like a business trying to cut costs (and with workers who don't want to be there). Oh, and most suites don't include breakfast.

We've heard good things about the Maui Hill (808-879-6321), an Aston hotel property. On the edge of Kihei near Wilea, the Maui Hill offers spacious condominiums, all of which have an ocean view. The property itself has a tennis court, shuffleboard, pool and putting green.

If you decide to stay in Kihei, we strongly recommend that you shop around online for furnished condos and B&B's--these are especially great (and economical) for families, groups of travelers, or honeymooners who would rather a more comfortable, quiet, and homey feel than a hotel might offer.
